Apple's dramatically redesigned operating system iOS 7 will be available to download on September 17th, says Craig Federighi senior vice president of Software at Apple.

The update will, first and foremost, give your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad a complete visual overhaul. Chunky app chrome and skeuomorphic ornamentation are out, while sparse white apps and bold primary colours are in.

Features wise, iOS 7 adds Control Center (where you can access system settings like brightness and Bluetooth from any app), multi-page folders, AirDrop between devices, new multitasking preview panes, automatic app updates, and iCloud keychain.

Siri has been given an upgrade, too. She/he can search Wikipedia, show results from Bing inside the Siri interface, search Twitter, and look for photos.

Plus, developers will be able to add background app refreshing and controller support, thanks to handy new APIs.

iOS 7 will be compatible with iPhone 4 and above, the fifth generation iPod touch, iPad 2 and above, and iPad mini. Certain features may be limited to certain devices. See more on that at the bottom of this page.
