Naval battle game Assassin's Creed Pirates will sail onto iOS and Android before the year is out

You know what's better than using stealth and guile to efficiently murder people involved in an ancient conspiracy, then sprinting away over rooftops using anachronistic freerunning skills?

Boats.

Which is why Ubisoft has ditched all that stabby nonsense for Assassin's Creed Pirates, a mobile spin-off surfacing on iOS and Android this autumn.

The game features huge stretches of the open sea for you to explore, as you set sail for adventure, mystery, and intrigue in the 18th century.

You can check out the trailer for Assassin's Creed Pirates below.

While Assassin's Creed Pirates is set in the same universe as the upcoming console epic Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, the stories are entirely separate. So, no, don't go looking for connections where there aren't any.

Instead, expect naval battles between Templars and Assassins; big areas of ocean to explore in your ever-improving ship; and a secret treasure that can only be found by deciphering a special code.

There'll probably be some nonsensical gibberish about the Garden of Eden, too. If we're lucky.

Assassin's Creed: Pirates will sail onto iOS and Android before the end of the year. Hopefully, the scurvy scoundrel we've sent to the Ubisoft show that's going on in Paris as I type will have some hands-on-impressions of the game up on the site soon.

In the meantime, why not have a gander at the screenshots in the gallery up at the top of this article.
