This week on the PS Vita Store - Spelunky, the Killzone: Mercenary open beta, and a new PS Plus game

This week is a mighty good week for the PS Vita. Believe me: I know about these sorts of things.

First off, there's a massive new indie release on the Vita store. Second off, the multiplayer beta for the next big retail Vita game is now open.

On top of this, there's a handful of great new downloadable titles that you'll want to at least consider.

What I'm trying to say is: the wallet / purse in which you store your money should be very scared right now.

Onwards! To Vita glory!

Full-price releases

Spelunky is the big one this week. If you haven't played this game before, you really need to. Now. If not sooner.

You're essentially making your way through randomly generated mines, jungles, and temples in a bid to reach the giant golden idol at the end. And for the first 24 hours or so, you won't make it.

In Spelunky, you will die over and over again. Oddly, you'll enjoy every death as much as the last. Make sure you plop that £11.99 / $14.99 down quickly and firmly.

Meanwhile, the beta for the Killzone: Mercenary multiplayer has just been opened up, meaning you can dive right in and sample the online action.

We enjoyed our recent hands-on with the game, so you should definitely go grab this beta build. It's free either way, so why not.

Otherwise, there's quite average boxing game Real Boxing for £7.99, rather good shooter Floating Cloud God Saves The Pilgrims in HD! for $3.49, and quite lovely The HD Adventures of Rotating Octopus Character for $2.99.

Sales, price drops, and PS Plus

A new month is nearly upon us, so a fresh batch of free PS Plus games is ready and willing for us to download.

You can now grab Urban Trial Freestyle and New Little King's Story for free if you have a PS Plus subscription. Both are well worth playing.

And if you're planning on grabbing Spelunky, PS Plus subscribers can get 20 percent off the full price for the next two weeks. Hurray.

PS Plus subscribers in the US, meanwhile, can play Machinarium for free this week. There's also a massive number of games on offer, including Spelunky, Draw Slasher and more.

Even if you're not a PS Plus subscriber, you can still take advantage of some heavy Vita discounts.

Need for Speed: Most Wanted
is just $19.99 now, while Retro City Rampage, Limbo, and more have had their RRPs slashed.

There doesn't appear to be any new PlayStation Mobile releases this week, so that's your lot.

Back again next week.
