Get ready for an eyeful - Oculus Rift's John Carmack working on mobile SDK

Many in the industry expected that Doom co-creator John Carmack was going to work some magic on the Oculus Rift gaming peripheral when he joined on as the company's CTO earlier this summer.

Yet few could have predicted the mobile focus he'd bring to the virtual reality headset.

Since June, Oculus has teased that it's been looking at mobile - specifically Android - but at a panel at GDC Europe 2013, Oculus' VP of product Nate Mitchell hinted that the mobile integration is coming sooner than expected.

Speaking about Carmack, Mitchell noted that "He's got a ridiculous amount of good ideas that he's working into the SDK. Especially around mobile, frankly".

Making it a reality

The Oculus team was asked for a rough release timetable at the panel's conclusion, with one attendee inquiring when iOS support would be announced.

Mitchell quickly explained that "It's Apple's fault!", and then noted that Android is more open for peripherals like Rift.

Based on the information coming out of GDC Europe, it looks like we might see mobile compatibility for the Rift before too long.
