If you like your point-and-click adventures dark and your protagonists slightly psychic, then keep your eyes on the UK and US App Stores at midnight tonight.

That's when when the second episode of Phoenix Online Studios's serial killer-sleuthing adventure Cognition will go live in those regions, you see.

We gave the first episode in the series a Bronze Award, praising it for being "an intriguing and entertaining game that plays around with the building blocks of the adventure genre".

We did, however, think the controls were a bit on the wonky side.

In this second episode, Phoenix Online Studios tells another chapter in the story of Erica Reed, an FBI agent with the ability to pick up items and see into their past.

This time around, Erica's on the trail of a killer called the Wise Monkey, who likes nothing better than horribly mutilating his victims.

The victim at the centre of this particular episode is one of Erica's close friends, and the resources of the FBI are already stretched to breaking point.

Cue lots of frantic pointing, clicking, and puzzle solving, as you try to get to Erica's friend before time runs out and your buddy gets all cut up and stuff.

If Cognition: Episode 2 is anything like its predecessor, it'll be grim, good looking, and innovative. Here's hoping Phoenix Online Studios has sorted out the controls in the six months between episodes, mind.

Cognition: Episode 2 will be available for the iPad at midnight tonight. It'll set you back £2.49 / $3.99.
