It's fair to say that most gamers have something of a soft spot for Team17's Worms series.

Most of us have a story to tell about a particularly dramatic or hilarious scrap we've had during the series's 18-year run.

Well, the first game in the series to be built from the ground-up for touchscreen devices, Worms 3, is finally here, meaning we can now pen some more mobile stories about sheep attacks and exploding old women.

The big addition this time around is a new card system. This enables you to play different buffs, boosts, and environmental oddities at the start or end of your turn.

It makes for more strategic play and means the well-worn gameplay feels a little more fresh.

You're still marshalling a squad of worms in a side-on, turn-based battle, mind, though there are different classes of soldier now. Each of these soldiers has slightly different attributes, stats, strengths, and weaknesses.

Lob in pass-the-handset and online multiplayer, and you're left with an impressively large barrel of invertebrates armed to the teeth with a variety of powerful, funny, and downright ridiculous weaponry.

Worms 3 is out now in New Zealand, which means it'll be hitting the UK and US App Stores at midnight tonight. It'll set you back £2.99 / $4.99.
