Rainbow Skies, the sequel to the hit indie RPG Rainbow Moon, is coming to the Vita in 2014

SideQuest Studios knows that it still owes Vita owners a port of its hit tactical JRPG Rainbow Moon, but that's not stopping it from announcing a sequel.

Over on the PlayStation Blog, SideQuest confirmed that Rainbow Skies - the 'indirect sequel' to Rainbow Moon - will come to the PS3 and PS Vita in 2014.

Rainbow Skies might carry the thematic torch of Rainbow Moon, but it's certainly not continuing its storyline. Skies will feature an all-new cast of characters and monsters on a new world with a story that isn't linked to Moon's.

But it's also coming with a bunch of player-requested enhancements to Moon's game mechanics as well.

The first new mechanic added to Rainbow Skies is a pet system that allows players to capture and tame monsters to use in later battles.

There'll also be a few tweaks to the combat system, including combo attacks, while the non-combat systems like side questing, building exploration, and mini-games are set to receive an overhaul as well.

Fans of the original Rainbow Moon might be worried by all the new features, but SideQuest studios hopes to put them at ease with the reassurance that "we're absolutely staying true to our roots. Fans of traditional RPG play can once again look forward to turn-based battles, free world and dungeon exploration, extensive character development, and lots of optional goodies. Including the ability to play across both PS3 and PS Vita."

SideQuest hasn't decided whether Rainbow Skies will support Cross-Buy compatibility yet, but it said that players should expect a price 'similar' to Rainbow Moon's. It'll definitely feature Cross-Save functionality, however, and will be coming to both Europe and North America.
