Maiden mobile Halo game Halo: Spartan Assault blasts onto Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8

Halo: Spartan Assault has just turned up on the Windows Store, meaning owners of a Windows 8, Windows RT, or Windows Phone 8 device can finally get their hands on this slice of Covenant-slaying action.

It's a surprise that it's taken this long for Microsoft to release a portable game set in its most popular gaming universe, and hopefully it represents a sea-change in The Big M's attitude toward mobile gaming.

As for the game itself, Halo: Spartan Assault is a top-down twin-stick shooter set between Halo 3 and Halo 4 in which you step into the armour-clad boots of Commander Sarah Palmer and Spartan Davis.

To begin with, the pair are stationed on the UNSC Infinity. Across the game's 25 levels, though, they'll fight through some never-before-seen battles in the Human-Covenant War.

There are leaderboards to work your way up, as well as weekly challenges to keep you playing. Multiplayer isn't included in Halo: Spartan Assault right now, but it should be available in the not-too-distant future.

Halo: Spartan Assault is available from the Windows Store for £4.99 / $6.99 [buy] and from the Windows Phone Store for the same price [buy].
