Some game scenarios are just so easy to relate with. Who, for example, hasn't been stuck in a speeding Gothic lift, beset on all sides by terrifying creatures and been forced to blast the beasts back to hell with arcane magic?

That's the premise behind Savant, a stop-gap free-to-play bullet-hell blaster made by D-Pad Studio in some downtime between developing sessions on the five-years-in-the-making Xbox 360 and PC platformer Owlboy.

In Savant, You're a purple-cloaked mage-sort who can dodge between two elevator cars, blasting the fearsome monsters that are clambering up to get you. Think bullet-hell meets Castlevania in a lift shaft with touch screen controls.

The game is a collaboration between D-Pad and Norwegian DJ Aleksander Vinter, aka. Savant, who's worked on the music for a number of other D-Pad projects.

It looks fluid and smooth, as you'd expect from D-Pad, and there's an air of arcade genius surrounding the trailer above. If D-Pad gets the controls right, then Savant could be something really special.

We don't have long to wait to find out either, with Savant heading to the App Store on July 30th.
