Square Enix has revealed the first - somewhat sketchy - details about the latest instalment in its Chaos Rings series.

And if you're a fan of the studio's smartphone RPG franchise, you might be in for a bit of a disappointment.

That's because it looks like Chaos Rings Sigma is going to be a social RPG.

What form that social RPG is going to take is unclear, but it's obviously going to be a step away from the series's more traditional adventuring.

What we do know is that this new Chaos Rings instalment will feature appearances from the 27 main characters in the series, including a couple of newcomers who feature in a soon-to-be-released manga tie-in.

The game's storyline will be written by Yukinori Kitajima, whose works include the original Chaos Rings and Okamiden. He was also responsible for part of the Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney narrative.

So, the Chaos Rings Sigma story might be quite interesting, at least.

Chaos Rings Sigma should be available on both iOS and Android later this year. We'll keep you updated with any more details as and when we get them.
