At a financial briefing at E3, industry giant Nintendo announced it will release a free-to-play game at some point this fiscal year. The firm's current financial year ends in March 2014.

These F2P comments were made by Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, and reported by industry analyst David Gibson on Twitter.

The only thing we know for sure right now about the identity of this free-to-play Ninty title, though, is that it won't be set in the Mario or Pokemon universes. This is because Nintendo already has "good relationships in those brands". Whatever that means.

Drop the bomb

This confirmed Nintendo free-to-play title could well turn out to be a Wii U-exclusive game, of course. It's been reported that Iwata was covering Wii U finances just before he dropped the F2P bomb, you see.

We've already speculated on how the Animal Crossing series would be a perfect match for the free-to-play business model, so maybe our crystal ball gazing is better than we thought.

As soon as any more information about Nintendo's first step into the free-to-play market comes to light, we'll be sure to let you know. For 69p a pop, of course. Joking.
