Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai has detailed the similarities and differences between the upcoming 3DS version of his company's ever-popular beat-'em-up franchise, and its bigger Wii U counterpart.

According to Sakurai, Super Smash Bros. for the 3DS will feature the same number of characters (which include the likes of Samus from the Metroid franchise and Link from the Legend of Zelda series) as the Wii U version.

However, each eager brawler in the handheld version of the game will feature a bold outline, which will make them a lot easier to see on the small screen of Nintendo's portable console.

Sakurai has also stated that the 3DS edition of the upcoming title will be packed with stages that are based on handheld (rather than console, like in the Wii U version) games.

Nintendo has decided to tweak a number of characters in these upcoming instalments of the Super Smash Bros. franchise, too.

Samus's costume, for example, is now based on Metroid: Other M rather than Super Metroid, while Pit (who now has new moves, by the way) is based on his appearance in Kid Icarus: Uprising.

Furthermore, the Villager from the Animal Crossing series can pick up a variety of items and use them as weapons. He can even grab one of Samus's missiles or her charge shot and sling it back towards her.
