Updated on June 6th, at 9:15: Square Enix has confirmed that Deus Ex: The Fall will also be released on Android. "Timing is still to be announced."

iOS owners will need at least an iPad 2, iPhone 4S, or fifth-generation iPod touch to play it.

We never asked for this, but it's happening...

The next Deus Ex game will be a first-person RPG shooter for iPhone and iPad. Its name Deus Ex: The Fall.

According to Jean-François Dugas, executive game director at Eidos-Montréal, this will be the "full Deus Ex experience", which means "exploration, action, hacking, stealth, social enhancers, player choice, and consequence".

Deus Ex: The Fall will also have "controls for intuitive touchscreen gameplay" and a "whole new story" (but with links to tie-in paperback The Icarus Effect, if you want a head start).

Survival of the fittest

The game's set in 2027 (the same year as console game Deus Ex: Human Revolution), and stars the book's hero, Ben Saxon, a former British SAS Mercenary and ex-member of the Tyrants (the bad guys from Human Revolution).

The story centres on powerful corporations who now command the supply of a drug that's needed by augmented humans to survive. Ben, a half-metal man himself, needs to free the supply of this drug to save his augmented brethren.

The game has been developed by Square Enix's mobile division in Europe in collaboration with the original Human Revolution team at Eidos-Montréal and Air Mail creator N-Fusion.

Deus Ex: The Fall will retail for £4.99 / $6.99, and this "first instalment of the mobile series" will be available in the summer.

For now, check out the Deus Ex: The Fall screenshots below (full-sized versions available in the gallery above).

Rather unwisely, Ben fires a tiny machine gun at a bloody great mech. We're in Panama. Well, unless the enormous sign in the background is lying to us.

The augmentation screen contains some old favourites, like punching through walls, going all invisible, falling safely from any height, and silent running.

We also see a slightly disconcerting image of a skull with a dollar sign on its noggin - might this mean there are in-app purchases in The Fall?

A city street. We can see a billboard for LIMB, the chain of augmentation clinics from where Adam Jensen picked up Praxis Kits in Human Revolution.

Saxon can take cover in The Fall. This will help him sneak around baddies. He's got a massive silencer on his gun, meaning that you can probably upgrade weapons.

We also see that Ben wears those same silly specs as Human Revolution hero Jensen.
