Incoming! The most exciting iOS and Android games for May and beyond
|

Yup, it's that time of the month again.

It's time - once again - to take a look at the most exciting iPhone, iPad, and Android games that will hit the App Store and Google Play over the next few weeks and months.

Each title in this list has the potential to leave our review room with a shiny Pocket Gamer Award, so we're desperate to get our mitts on them.

You should be, too.

Take control of a homicidal lumberjack and battle your way through waves of seriously peeved-off bison and bears in this Streets of Rage-style side-scrolling beat-'em-up.

Fist of Awesome is the brainchild of Nicoll Hunt, who also developed Silver Award-winning arcade title Hard Lines. So, we have high hopes for this one.

Wayward Saga

This Mage Gauntlet follow-up is an action-packed roguelike in which you grab a weapon and battle your way through randomly generated dungeons in search of loot.

Along the way, you earn experience from the enemies you slay, which enables you to level-up and improve your chances of survival.

Frozen Synapse

Frozen Synapse is a bit of a cult hit on PC.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with it, it's a simultaneous turn-based strategy shooter in which you have to help a small resistance faction overcome a corporate government regime.

This shooter will hit the App Store complete with cross-platform play, which - basically - means you can compete against other players on PC and Android.

Scurvy Scallywags
By Gilbert & Kauzlaric - coming to iPhone and iPad soon; to Android later

Monkey Island creator Ron Gilbert is working on a new puzzle game for iOS and Android. Is there a more glorious sentence than that in the English language? We think not.

Scurvy Scallywags in The Voyage to Discover the Ultimate Sea Shanty: A Musical Match-3 Pirate RPG is, as its name suggests, a match-three puzzle game set on the Seven Seas.

We don't know too much about this title, but we do know that it will feature plenty of shirts, swords, ships, and other pirate-themed memorabilia to collect.

Dead Trigger 2
By Madfinger Games - coming to iPhone, iPad, and Android in Q2 2013

Dead Trigger 2 details are still rather scarce, but it's pretty safe to assume that its gameplay will involve mowing down waves of zombies and other monsters with more weapons than the US military has.

"Compared to Dead Trigger, the sequel Dead Trigger 2 is going to be even bigger, better, and much more addictive," Marek Rabas, Madfinger's co-founder, said at the beginning of this year.

Redline Rush
By DogByte Games - coming to iPhone, iPad, and Android in May

Redline Rush is an arcade-style racing game that bears more than a passing resemblance to those adrenaline-filled Burnout titles that you've probably played on your Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3.

Expect lots of weaving in and out of oncoming traffic; plenty of police chases; floods of vehicular takedowns; and a boatload of slow motion crashes, then.

Kingdom Rush: Frontiers
By Ironhide Game Studio - coming to iPhone and iPad this spring

Ironhide Games Studio's iPad tower defence title Kingdom Rush surfaced on the App Store in December 2011, and instantly became a hit. It was rated highly by consumers and even bagged a Gold Award from your beloved Pocket Gamer.

Ironhide hopes to build on that success with this sequel, which will include new units, towers, and - among other things - enemies.

Jacob Jones and the Bigfoot Mystery
By Lucid Games - coming to iPhone and iPad in May

In this puzzle-adventure game, you assume the role of a young boy scout called Jacob upon his arrival at a fictional encampment known as Camp Eagle.

As Jacob, you have to explore the forest around you, complete all manner of tricky puzzles, and - ultimately - solve the mystery of the mythical man-beast Bigfoot.

Buddy & Me
By Sunbreak Games - coming to iPhone, iPad, and Android in June

Buddy & Me is a gorgeous-looking endless-running title in which you guide a young boy and his mysterious Falcor-like creature friend through a forest canopy.

According to Buddy & Me developer Jason Behr (who's worked on the likes of Halo 4 and Metroid Prime), this new game will be lighthearted and playful, and will centre on companionship and exploration.

Ring Run Circus
By Kalio - coming to iPhone and iPad in May or June

Ring Run Circus is a platformer of sorts. Well, it's actually more of a "ringformer", to be honest.

You see, your aim in this title is to guide one of three characters (with unique attributes) around stages that are made up of various rings.

Along the way, you have to collect flowers and keys, and flip between adjacent rings to reach each level's exit.

Anthony Usher
Anthony Usher
Anthony is a Liverpool, UK-based writer who fell in love with gaming while playing Super Mario World on his SNES back in the early '90s. When he isn't busy grooming his beard, you can find him replaying Resident Evil or Final Fantasy VII for the umpteenth time. Aside from gaming, Anthony likes hiking, MMA, and pretending he’s a Viking.
