If the App Store is the arcade of the early 21st century then Bottle Cap Blitz is the equivalent of the battered skill game in the corner that you spent your last 40 pence on. It's an entertaining diversion hidden near the back behind the 2p pushers and glitzy cabinets.

It might not be a looker, and it might not scream at you to pour your time and money into it, but it's a solid and reliable waste of a few minutes - albeit one that never quite manages to wriggle its way into your psyche.

Bottle it up

The game is a simple twist on the Fruit Ninja formula. Ice cubes fly in from the sides of the screen and, rather than slashing them with swipes you need to tap on the screen to fire bottle caps at them. You've got 60 seconds to hit as many as you can.

The more you play the more risks and rewards the game adds. First you need to learn to combo together cubes, smashing more than one with a single cap flick. Then you'll find fruit frozen in some of your targets, and smashing these gives you boosts and bonuses.

After that, someone starts throwing pebbles at you. Hitting these resets your combo score, clears the screen, and takes a few points off your total. You can buy special power-ups at the start of each round with the coins you collect through play that can negate some of their ill effects, though.

The gameplay gets a little repetitive after a while, but chasing your high score and inching up the leaderboards is often enough to push you on to one more go. This might be a one-trick pony, but it's a pretty fun trick.

Pop

Bottle Cap Blitz is a bit of a guilty pleasure - the sort of game you'll grab a couple of rounds of when you find yourself with some spare time. It's certainly not something you'll sink your teeth into for a mammoth session, but that's never been what arcade games have been about.

The cigarette-stained cabinet and scowling change attendant might be missing, but Bottle Cap Blitz is an entertaining encapsulation of the best bits of seaside arcade gaming. Don't expect any more than that and you're in for a treat.
