Gameloft will release Dungeon Hunter 4 onto the (occasionally) dark and (always) cavernous UK and US App Stores at midnight this evening.

The Diablo-esque series underwent something of a metamorphosis for its last iOS and Android outing, with Gameloft transforming the Dungeon Hunter experience from a single-player dungeon-crawler into a freemium arena fighter.

This change in direction didn't sit well with the Dungeon Hunter faithful, however, many of whom expressed their anger through 1-star App Store reviews.

With Dungeon Hunter 4, Gameloft seems to have combined the single-player exploration of the first two games with the arena battles of the third, presumably in the hope of concocting a universal favourite.

Picking a character from either Warrior, Knight, Rogue, or Mage classes, you must battle your way through Dungeon Hunter 4's 25 scene-long campaign, levelling-up and looting as you go.

If the road gets a little too lonely, you can hook up with friends to tackle co-op arenas. Alternatively, if you don't like the cut of their jib, you can pound your buddies into the dust in PvP mode.

You will be able to download Dungeon Hunter 4 for free for iPhone and iPad from midnight. The Android version is expected to surface shortly after.
