Tamagotchis are back, and this time they're on Android

Remember that Tamagotchi you promised your parents you'd totally look after? Yeh, the one you got bored of within a week and left to starve to death at the back of Jenny Whitman's locker?

Well, it's time to make amends, because Namco Bandai has released a Tamagotchi Android app which contains all of the original digital pets ... plus some new arrivals.

For anyone who missed out on the virtual pet craze, these collectible Tamagotchis were housed in a small egg-shaped computer with a teeny LCD screen.

Using buttons, you had to feed, bathe, entertain, and medicate your tiny animated beastie to keep it alive.

Pet sematary

In this new Tamagotchi L.i.f.e. app, you get the chance to own and care for any of the 40+ digital creatures who began to appear on kids' wish lists around 1996.

And if you're looking to recreate the classic Tamagotchi experience, you can play with a visual recreation of the small plastic egg, complete with virtual rubber buttons and monochrome LCD creature.

Alternatively, if you fancy bringing your pet-rearing setup into the 21st century, you can ditch the retro skin in favour of a full-colour interface, replete with new characters and a pet storage area.

You can download Tamagotchi L.i.f.e. for free on Android right now. Be warned, however: the list of compatible devices is oddly restrictive (Galaxy S II users need not apply, for example).
