CES 2013: Nvidia unveils the next-gen Tegra chip that will power future Android smartphones and tablets

Chip specialist Nvidia has used this year's Consumer Electronics Show to unveil its next-generation Tegra mobile processor.

Nvidia's Tegra 4 is said to boast six times the graphics performance of its predecessor, thanks to a whopping 72 graphics-dedicated cores.

Again, that's six times the number of cores found on the Tegra 3, which powers a range of current Android smartphones and tablets, such as the Nexus 7.

The Tegra 4 chip will maintain the Tegra 3's four-plus-one quad-core design, but will arrive packing ARM's new Cortex A15 architecture and support for 4G LTE.

Nvidia's current-gen Tegra doesn't support this increasingly popular mobile broadband standard. The fact that the Tegra 3 chip doesn't support 4G is a major limitation for the devices that are powered by it.

According to Nvidia, its new chip is powerful enough to fuel resolutions of up to 2560x1600, and pump out 1080p-quality visuals at an impressive 120Hz.

And, yes, it is apparently more powerful than the A6X processor that powers Apple's fourth-gen iPad. There, are you happy now?
