If you're one of those gamers who laments the absence of an official iOS WipEout port, the sight of Pixelbite's latest futuristic racer might just get your engine running.

Clearly taking its lead from Studio Liverpool's anti-gravity racing series (which itself was inspired by Nintendo's F-Zero), Repulze is an iOS racer featuring sci-fi visuals, twisting track design, and breakneck speeds.

That last point is important, as it's speed and speed alone that's going to get you to the next level.

You see, you're a test pilot for a faceless corporation, and must push the company's Repulze hovercrafts to hypersonic speeds, presumably to ensure the safety of individuals more valuable than you.

Though there don't appear to be any competitors in Repulze, the game aims to keep you on your toes with a series of polarity gates.

Pass through enough like-coloured gates and you trigger a shift in polarity, similar to the colour-coded energy system found in bullet-hell shooter Ikaruga.

Well-timed shifts boost your score and give you the energy required to complete each race.

Slipstream

Though we've all seen this kind of hovership racer before, Repulze does seem to deliver on the promise of slick visuals and a steady framerate.

Whether the polarity mechanic makes up for the lack of AI or multiplayer opponents remains to be seen, however.

You can purchase Repulze on iPhone and iPad for the introductory price of 69p / 99c.
