You might remember a few weeks ago we reviewed a golf game for mobile called Hole in One. During that review, we commented that the game felt like a shooting game given a golf-themed makeover.

Well, Marksman Shooting is the game that Hole in One is based on. Rather than putts and drives it involves shooting targets, but everything else is identical, from the two different modes to the way of playing. This is the same game in a slightly different hat.

Shot down

The two different modes are now called the 10m Air Rifle and the Rapid Fire Pistol, but they follow the exact same template as Hole in One. 10m Air Rifle is all about taking your time and lining up the right shot, while Rapid Fire Pistol is all about hitting a target quickly.

In the air rifle event you need to guide an erratic cursor to the centre of a target using either the joystick on your phone, or the number buttons if you don't have one. When the shot's lined up, tap '5' or click the stick down and you'll fire.

Rinse and repeat to get a final score which is usually ten or so short of your supernaturally accurate opponents. You can play a single round, or engage in a much longer tournament.

The pistol game is a little more frantic. Targets scroll past and you need to hit them. Accuracy is still important, but you need to make sure you hit every target or your score is going to be woefully under par. Or whatever the shooting term for under par is.

Shot through

The only reason that Marksman Shooting gets a slightly higher score than Hole in One is because it's a more accurate representation of the sport it's supposed to be aping. It's still repetitive, still crushingly dull, and still won't hold your attention for more than a couple of rounds.

If you're desperate for a shooting game, there are plenty of others out there, and almost all of them are better than this watered down, boring tripe. Avoid Marksman Shooting at all costs.

An awful, cynical game, Marksman Shooting is as dull as watching already dried paint
