It's time to take a trip back to 1995, as Square Enix has unleashed its time-travelling RPG epic Chrono Trigger on Android phones and tablets.

In this epic game, a group of adventurers travel through time - leaping between the past and the distant future, and even making a trip to the very end of time - to prevent a global catastrophe.

The SNES original was made by a dream team of Japanese talent, including Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii, and Dragon Ball manga artist Akira Toriyama.

As such, Chrono Trigger broke new ground in JRPGs with its clever battle system and its multiple endings.

About time

This Android version purports to have "intuitive" touchscreen controls, and graphics optimised especially for mobile. But, if it's anything like last year's iPhone port, we don't expect to be wowed on those two fronts.

In our review of that iOS version, we warned potential buyers that they'd have to look past "fuzzy graphics and occasionally awkward controls" to get at "hours of riveting RPG entertainment".

Also, like the iOS version, this Android edition includes the additional Dimensional Vortex and Lost Sanctum areas from the Nintendo DS release.

Chrono Trigger is available on Google Play right now for £6.99 / $9.99.
