And the rest... Cave Story on eShop, The Hunger Games, Critter Escape

It has been a day of curious new releases. Fiendishly difficult puzzler The Curse is now on Android (don't worry, we've got a guide to the first batch of head scratchers), and Apocalypse Max looks like a blend of Metal Slug and Resident Evil.

On the pocket gaming horizon, we've got an expansion pack to the absolute mouthful that is Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013, and there might just be a Sword of Fargoal 2 - if the developer can scrounge together $50,000.

New releases

Music Samurai is a Temple Run-style auto-runner with a difference. Your Katana-wielding hero must slice and dice undead samurai in time to the music. Why? Well, to work up a combo and to stay alive. We haven't played it, but it looks rather interesting. 69p / 99c on iOS.

Stealth puzzler Critter Escape has, ahem, escaped from the shackles of the Amazon Appstore, and is now available on Google Play. In this game, you trace evasive routes through 120 tightly guarded levels.

If Adam "Canabalt" Saltsman's The Hunger Games: Girls on Fire wasn't enough post-apocalyptic action for you, how's about this official adventure game on iPad? It's got quests, it's got new stories, and it finally shows off the official map of Panem. Phew! I've been waiting ages for that!

On the horizon atr-cavestory

Nicalis's side-scrolling indie shooter Cave Story will hit the US 3DS eShop on October 4th. This is the pixellated original - not the (rather hideous) 3D version that debuted on Ninty's newest handheld late last year. It costs $9.99, works in widescreen, and has some extra challenge modes.

Finnish developer 10tons has said it will update a handful of its apps, including Joining Hands, Ironworm, and Swingworm, to support the iPhone 5's new 4-inch display. In tile-matching puzzler Azkend 2: The World Beneath, the extra screen real estate will allow you to see additional rows of tiles.

Big updates

Namco's issued an update to its swanky dogfighting game Sky Gamblers: Air Supremacy. The new version carries three new planes (the RFT100, the RFX32, and the RFNSB), and gives you more war paint in each virtual paint tin. Best of all, the file size has been reduced by a whopping 50 per cent.

Sales

Indie game maker kode80 is putting the development of new titles on hold for a while, and has put its retro-style iOS games on sale to help raise funds. 1-bit Ninja is 69p / 99c and Oh Hi! Octopi! is also 69p / 99c.
