Hiroshi Iuchi, the lead game designer of classic arcade shoot-'em-up Ikaruga, has been working on a new fast-paced shooter for the Nintendo 3DS.

The shooter's called Kokuga, and in it you'll compete against all manner of gun-wielding robots and spaceships across various top-down arenas.

Kokuga features a card-based power-up system that allows you to activate special offensive and defensive boosts during battle.

Basically, at the start of each stage, you're given 20 power-up cards. Four of these are selected at random and displayed on-screen as you play. You can activate them with a simple tap any time you feel you need a little backup.

Unfortunately, we don't really know anything else about this upcoming shooter, so we suggest you watch the video below for a peek at the game's frantic action.

Kokuga will be released in Japan on September 27th.
