The riddle of Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask's European release date has been solved

Riddle-filled adventure game Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask is set to debut in Europe on Nintendo 3DS on October 26th.

It's Layton's fifth adventure, and, as usual, it's all about solving brainteasers and puzzles while you work at uncovering a greater mystery. This time around, you get 150 riddles to solve: fewer than Professor Laytons 3 and 4, it should be said.

The game features Layton, Luke, and Emmy, who are called upon to stop the mysterious Masked Gentleman from terrorising the city of Monte d'Or. The trio suspects a cursed mask that can bestow evil power on whoever wears it, called Major- sorry, the Mask of Chaos.

It's set some time after the events of Professor Layton and the Spectre's Call, but there are also whopping great flashbacks to Layton's youth as an archaeologist. Here, you'll explore ancient ruins and try to escape puzzling chambers.

The game uses 3D animations and character models, rather than the hand-drawn artwork of the previous instalments. It looks ever-so-slightly hideous, though we'll wait to see how it looks when the 3D slider is turned on until we pass final judgement.

Like all the other Layton games, Miracle Mask has got 365 additional Daily Puzzles, which are sent to your 3DS via the Nintendo Network. That's one puzzle a day for a year, but you don't need to be a Layton expert to figure that one out.

The game will hit shops on October 26th, and it will also be available to download via the Nintendo eShop. If it's anything like New Super Mario Bros. 2, the eShop version will be ridiculously expensive.

Yesterday, Nintendo and Level-5 announced a sixth Professor Layton game, which will hit 3DS in 2013 in Japan. Apparently, it's Layton's last-ever adventure. Aww.
