Nokia and Microsoft have announced that they will kickstart this year's Nokia World convention by holding a joint press conference in New York on September 5th.

While we don't know for sure what will go down during the conference, it's probably safe to assume that we'll get a first official look at the Finnish developer's line of upcoming Windows Phone 8-powered handsets.

The invitations sent out to US journalists even hint at it. For starters, they're emblazoned with the new mini and large tiles that are associated with the next major iteration of the Windows Phone OS.

Furthermore, Chris Weber, Nokia's executive VP of sales and marketing, has confirmed on Twitter that we'll see a next-generation Lumia "soon".

"Samsung take note, next generation Lumia coming soon. #nokia," Weber tweeted.

Nokia obviously believes it's about to release an industry-leading smartphone if it's confident enough to tackle Samsung head on. Hot air or hot phone? We'll find out in a matter of weeks.
