It's how much?!

New Super Mario Bros. 2 gets crazy price tag on Nintendo eShop

You may want to sit down before reading this - when New Super Mario Bros. 2 hits Nintendo's eShop next week, it's going to cost £39.99. Nope, I'm not making it up.

Digital distribution is supposed to cut down costs by doing away with physical boxes and storage media. These savings should then be passed down to the consumer. In theory.

In the case of New Super Mario Bros. 2, however, it seems that you'll be paying extra for the privilege of NOT receiving a physical copy.

It's sort of fitting when you consider New Super Mario Bros. 2 is the first Mario game in which the focus is on collecting coins. Instead of rescuing Princess Peach, you are aiming to collect 1 million coins, you see.

While Nintendo hasn't revealed the reasons for this somewhat extravagant price tag - aside from the obvious - for New Super Mario Bros. 2, it's most likely that it just doesn't want to go stepping on retailers' toes.
