Nintendo and the British Film Institute have joined forces to launch a new competition that invites you to submit a short film shot entirely using your 3DS or 3DS XL handheld.

If you're interested in entering, you'll need to make sure that your film fits into the competition's 'British Summer 2012' theme, makes clever use of 3D technology, and runs for no longer than 60 seconds.

The winner of this competition will be announced in early September, and will have the chance to shoot a new 3D short film that will be shown for the very first time prior to Nintendo's Gala screening at the BFI London Film Festival in October.

Three runners-up will receive a pair of tickets to the BFI London Film Festival and a bunch of other prizes.

Entries will be judged by "an expert panel" that features Stuart Warren-Hill (an AV artist and innovator in the field of electronic music and visual media) and Asif Kapadia (director of hit documentary Senna).

"Digital and 3D filmmaking is within the grasp of everyone these days. I'm excited by all the skill and talent that's emerging in the UK, telling stories in different ways and it's vital that it gets our support," award-winning Gladiator director Ridley Scott, said.

Be sure to upload your entry to Nintendo's website before midnight on September 2nd.
