PG Applympics 2012: Medal ceremony for the water sports
|

After five engrossing days of high-level voting on the water sports (stop sniggering!) at the inaugural PG Applympics, the proverbial whistle has blown and the competition has now closed.

All of the votes have been counted and verified by an independent adjudicator (Facebook) this morning. The results were then passed to me in a purple envelope by PG features editor Mark Brown.

Before I reveal the winner and runners-up in the water sports category at PG Applympics 2012, a word - or 16 - from the PG Applympics founder, Baron de Bennallack.

"My philosophical ideal for video gaming competition is as valid today as it was last week."

For those who have already forgotten de Bennallack's wonderful philosophy on sports-based video games, shame on you. Here it is again, though. Pay attention.

"The important thing in life is the triumph, not the struggle. The essential thing is to have conquered, not to just fight well."

Win at all costs, basically.

Always believe in your soul

So, with this noble philosophical ideal ringing in our collective ears, let's cross live to this year's third award ceremony at Kelston Park, Bath.

PG deputy editor Will Wilson should be standing by to present your three most popular water sports with their respective medals…
Riptide GP - There are winning margins. Then there are WINNING MARGINS. Then then there are races involving Usain Bolt.

Vector Unit's wave-based racer took a leaf out of the Jamaican sprint star's book and left everybody else (bar Yohan Blake) standing at the start line. 52 per cent of the popular vote?! Woof.

Harbor Master - Imangi may have missed out on a medal last week in the Applympics running event by a cat's whisker, but sporting redemption is never far around the corner... especially for a competitor of this calibre.

Thus, Harbor Master sails off into the Bath sunset with a glistening silver medal at the prow of the ship. Lovely.

Where's My Water? - Right over there, son, where you last left it. I digress.

To be honest, we weren't quite sure whether Disney's Where's My Water? would sink or swim in this particular contest - it all depended on how many casual puzzle fans turned up at the ballot box. On reflection, it never looked like drowning.
