Given that I've been playing Supercell's Clash of Clans for over a month as part of its Canadian beta, I shouldn't be bothered that it's now out globally.

Actually, I'm pretty annoyed because if you download the free-to-play 3D camp-building, army-raising, player-versus-player, guild-based game right now, you get 500 free gems.

They're the in-game hard currency you use to buy high value items and speed up your buildings or troop creation.

500 gems is worth £2.99, $4.99 or €3.99.

Into battle

In terms of how the game works, there are a couple of distinct stages, which I've written about in my preview articles.

During the first week, I didn't spend any cash, but slowly built up my base, also learning how to use my troops to attack the goblins in the single player mode.

You have to be fairly advanced before you unlock the clan elements - I did that during my second and third weeks, when I started to spend some cash - but the game doesn't force you to do so.

You only spend real money if you want to speed up certain key buildings, not just to play on a daily basis.

Over the top

So while I'm working on my next hands on article - due this week and covering PVP combat - I can solidly recommend that you try out Clash of Clans.

I've played it pretty much every day - maybe for 20 minutes daily across three or four sessions - for a month, and expect to be playing it for the next month or so.
