Turn your iPhone into an Xperia Play with the Bladepad

A slide-out success story?

Virtual buttons and joysticks are the bane of many iPhone game ports thanks to their fiddly nature and lack of tactile response.

The somewhat unfortunately named Bladepad (ouch!) seeks to correct the virtual button issue with a new combination controller and protective case that recently came to Kickstarter in search of funding.

Featuring a slide-out controller layout eerily reminiscent of the Xperia Play – with the notable addition of two centrally located joysticks – the Bladepad controller interfaces with the iPhone via a Bluetooth connection.

Taking control

The idea of introducing physical gaming inputs the iPhone is by no means new: in the past year several solutions – some mobile, others less so – have appeared on the market.

What makes the Bladepad unique among these solutions is its robust suite of controls (a directional pad, four buttons, and two joysticks) and its portability.

Gamers looking to keep the bulk down can separate the Bladepad controller from its iPhone case and connect them when the urge to game on the go strikes.

Still, given the relative failure of the Xperia Play to attract a sizable consumer base, one cannot help but wonder if this slide-out controller interface is destined to falter as well.

Should Bladepad meet its Kickstarter goals, the suggested retail price for the controller will be $99.00.
