But please no more card battlers

I getting pretty bored of Japanese social networks such as DeNA and GREE releasing utterly confusing card battling games.

They may be very popular in Japan, but frankly I don't have a clue what to do in them.

Actually, I think most of them stink and are purely designed to get you to buy IAP. There appears to be very little actual gameplay or strategy.

Turning the pack

Good news seems to be on the way at the Gamescom conference in Germany during August, however. GREE will be demoing games that aren't card battlers.

First up is Wacky Motors, which is GREE's version of Mario Kart. Check out the video below.

More interesting conceptually is the free-to-play version of Metal Slug.

The gameplay of the classic side-scrolling run-and-gun game doesn't need any introduction, but this version of the game is being touted as the first massively multiplayer online RTS version of the franchise.

"Players command and develop their own army, and while playing in cooperation with or against other players, they must try to stop the coup attempted by General Morden's Rebel Army," say GREE.

Again, no mention of cards that I can see, although the games' management screen looks like this.

Less interesting - at least to me - is Astro Pizza, a social mobile game that has you running your own pizza parlor in outer space.

We have even less information about the two games GREE is developing with Moshi Monsters. Could one be a card battler? I hope not.

Anyhow, we'll find out as GREE will be showing these off from 15-19th August in the Gamescom consumer hall 9.1, booth A021/B020.
