Rovio keeps making Angry Birds games and people keep playing them, which means the formula still works. That's what Gamevil and Appnori are counting on, anyway, with the release of their Toy Shot game onto Google Play.

Like its obvious inspiration, the goal here is to bring down a bunch of simple structures by lobbing things at them. It's all about judging angles and using the right tool for the job.

Of course, the key differentiating factor with Toy Shot is the setting - this is a pleasant toy box world filled with Lego-style building blocks and smiley action figures. Your arsenal of crossbows, missiles, and bombs is slightly less light hearted, however.

We reviewed the iOS version of Toy Shot back in December and found it to be a highly creditable and nicely varied attempt at a trajectory puzzler. Well, that's to say, once it threw off the shackles of Rovio's design template and started skipping to its own tune.

With its more than 100 levels - that incorporate boss challenges, defence stages, and a gleefully destructive special attack involving a giant dragon - there's more going on in Toy Shot than meets the eye.

Toy Shot is available to download for free now on the Google Play Store [download].
