Biology meets real-time strategy in Human Defense, out today on iOS

I’m currently suffering from a very nasty cold, so the idea of playing a game in which you gather up carbs, proteins, and other building-blocks of the human body to form defences against invading viruses sounds rather appealing right now.

It’s good timing, then, that Human Defense - a new biology-themed tower defence title from Heliceum games - has landed on iOS.

Rather than split away from reality and go all sci-fi as with Hogrocket’s Tiny Invaders, Human Defense packs in quite a bit of basic biology to go along with its tower building nature. So if you don’t know what protein does, you can read up on it inside the app itself.

Fightback

This isn’t, however, a educational tool masquerading as a game - in fact, from what I’ve played so far, it’s actually quite a challenging strategy title.

Constructing ‘towers’, for instance, is limited by how many building blocks enter the particular organ you’re fighting in, rather than built with magical currency gained from kills.

There’s also the issue of keeping your organs supplied with enough of these substances to remain healthy, taking away resources from your defences in the process.

This means forward planning is very much at the forefront of Human Defense’s strategy, as opposed to mindlessly upgrading every tower on the map.

Human Defense is out now, priced at £1.49 / $1.99.
