Narrative at the core for this socially connected spin-off

GREE and Ubisoft teaming up to bring Assassin’s Creed Utopia to smartphones

Ubisoft and GREE will be bringing a new, narrative and social gaming-driven version of the Assassin’s Creed franchise to mobiles later this year: Assassin’s Creed Utopia.

It's not yet clear what this latest entry into the AC canon will consist of, but producer Andreane Meunier told me at E3 this year that Ubisoft wanted to focus on something that fans of the series will recognise as “a true Assassin’s Creed experience”.

She also revealed that the game will involve you “building your own Assassin’s Creed utopian colonial city.”

Uncovering the plot

What we do know about the game is that it’ll be set at the very start of the colonial era, focusing on the immigrants who first arrived in the New World to create their own utopia away from persecution in Europe at the end of the 16th century.

Meunier also told me that Abstergo has created something called ‘Utopia’, presumably in the future (given that AC lore puts the company in the 20th-21st century). My educated guess is that it’s an off-shoot from the Animus project.

Certainly the narrative seems to be a major focus for Ubisoft on this particular outing, with Meunier telling me that she felt earlier AC games on mobile “weren’t offering necessarily the same kind of focus on the narrative”.

Understandably, Ubisoft wants to keep most of the details under wraps for now, but Meunier did reveal that the game’s plot won’t have any direct links to the upcoming console title, Assassin’s Creed III.

Social assassin

The partnership with GREE means that Utopia will have a more social slant than earlier games, although Meunier stressed that this didn’t mean losing touch with the series’ ‘hardcore’ origins.

“We’re working together to make a unique experience on mobile that’s not going to be just ‘casual’, but that can also be related to more ‘hardcore’ brands...what we’ve been looking at is to have a true Assassin’s Creed experience, to make sure the fans and those that know and love the brand really recognise the Assassin’s Creed touch.”

We’ll have more details - and screenshots - of Assassin’s Creed Utopia in the coming months.
