Fantasy first-person shooter Heretic has been given a 21st century makeover, and is now playable on compatible Android devices as HereticGLES.

Ported by Kokak, the same dev responsible for bringing DoomGLES to Google Play back in March, the game charges you with defeating the evil Serpent Riders by directing powerful spells at anyone - or anything - that dares to cross your path.

It's not just a straight port, either: the 2D sprites of old are now 3D models; dynamic lighting and particle effects have been added; and both blood and water effects look a little wetter / gooier.

The right incantation

As with DoomGLES, legal restrictions mean your purchase will only net you the shareware version of Heretic. However, if you happen to own the full game, copying the heretic.wad file onto your mobile device will unleash the complete hellish package.

If you prefer the feel of physical controllers over touchscreen inputs, you'll want to make sure you have a device compatible with wireless pads, as Xperia Play touchpad support is still a work in progress (buttons and touchscreens are supported, however).

HereticGLES is available on Google Play for £1.31 / $2.14 [download].
