Bloody good fun

Sega's Alexandria Bloodshow arrives on iOS with promo pricing

Some players feel that even the best tower defence strategy games can be a bit dry at times.

Sega has looked to turn this misconception on its decapitated head with Alexandria Bloodshow, which is now available on the App Store.

We went hands-on with this game back in March and found it to be a historically accurate (bloody, gruesome) depiction of warfare between ancient Egyptians and Greeks.

More importantly, we found it was a satisfying strategy experience mixing elements of chess with a solid trading card game component similar to Magic the Gathering.

And blood. Don’t forget the blood.

Players earn Zen Cards through winning battles, but may also buy them as an in-app purchase (a 12-pack costs $3.99, while a 7-pack costs $2.99) These cards represent the units available to deploy, so it is in a player’s vested interest to have a wide variety at their disposal.

Despite the sumptuous graphics which capture the simple, yet artistic, aesthetic of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics and Greek pottery, the game is not firmly rooted in history. Players can – and most likely will – deploy scantily-clad dancing girls and vengeful gods to support their cavalry and spear phalanxes.

Alexandria Bloodshow will appeal to fans of strategy role-playing games, card strategy games, and Quentin Tarantino movies. It is currently free-to-try as a universal app with the unlockable version costing 99c from June 7 – 10.
