EA may have been first out of the Vita tunnel with the handheld version of its big football franchise FIFA, but it's not going to be the only player on the Vita park for too long.

Konami has confirmed that a Vita-powered version of its competing footy series Pro Evolution Soccer is in development for the platform.

However, VideoGamer is reporting that it won't be ready in time for release in the autumn alongside this year's console iteration. Instead - as reported by us last month - it'll be just the PSP that PES 2013 will kick off on in Q3 2012.

Second-half slump?

While this should be semi-encouraging news for Vita-owning PES fans, it's not a given that Team PES will support the platform for much of its lifecycle.

Speaking to Eurogamer, producer Naoya Hatsumi said that Konami was "looking into the future of the Pro Evolution Soccer series" and how it might fit across the various platforms in the industry, with mobile and tablets described as "the future".

"People no longer just use the console to access the game, because you are using your iPhone, for example, or a tablet. So much more, people have potential access to our game if we have it on those devices."
