Sony is hoping to make a big -ahem - splash in the smartphone market with two new hard-wearing, water resistant handsets: the Xperia go and Xperia acro S.

Xperia go

The Xperia go will be the smaller of the two units, and will feature a 3.5-inch Bravia-powered Reality Display, a 5-megapixel camera, and a 1GHz dual-core processor.

Xperia acro S

If you like your handset with a little more meat on its bones (and more pixels on their screens), then the 4.3-inch screen of the Xperia acro S might spark your interest.

That high-resolution 1280x720 display will be powered by a beefy 1.5GHz dual-core processor, which will help it to handle full 1080p video recording via its 12-megapixel rear camera.

Hard-wearing

Sony has put durability at the centre of its marketing push for the Xperia go and Xperia acro S, choosing to highlight the scratch-resistant, wet finger-tracking mineral glass display present on both phones.

The higher-spec Xperia acro S is also advertised as being extremely water resistant, capable of being submerged at a depth of one metre for up to 30 minutes with no ill effects. We look forward to seeing the YouTube experiments.

The Xperia go will ship with Android 2.3 (a.k.a. Gingerbread), with the option to upgrade to 4.0 (a.k.a. Ice Cream Sandwich) at a later date. It features 8GB internal storage, and will be available in black, white, and yellow.

The Xperia acro S will come equipped with Android Ice Cream Sandwich, HDMI support, 16GB of internal storage, and be available in black, white, and pink.

Both handsets are scheduled to be released in Q3 2012.
