Verizon Xperia Plays finally get updated to Gingerbread 2.3.4

If you're an Xperia Play owner on US carrier Verizon, we've got good news: there's an update available for your handset.

Don't get too excited, though. This isn't the long-awaited Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) update, so you'll have to stop fantasising about Face Unlock and dreaming of an enhanced UI for now.

Instead, this OTA update for Verizon Xperia Plays brings the handset up to Android version 2.3.4. To check whether the update is available to download for your Play, bring up the 'settings' menu, tap 'About Phone', and then give the 'Software Update' option a good prod.

Pre-ICS snack

This latest update improves the Xperia Play's camera, allowing you to capture 720p video with continuous auto-focus and use the smartphone's right trigger as a shutter button.

Verizon has also stuffed some carrier-specific applications into the update for you, so you'll have to tolerate the presence of Verizon Video on Demand if you want Gingerbread 2.3.4. Oh, well.

If you're planning on updating your Xperia Play to ICS, you have 4-6 weeks to wait until the official rollout commences.
