Is Samsung doing an Apple and naming its next Android superphone ‘The next Galaxy’?

I think it’s fair to say that the level of hype surrounding Samsung’s next flagship Galaxy smartphone can be summarised as the Android equivalent of the iPhone, such is the fervour of rumour and speculation surrounding the mysterious high-end handset.

Today saw both a new teaser site (which has been down for most of the day, presumably due to server load) for the new phone, as well as the first of the network partners, Vodafone, to set up a pre-order page for the upcoming handset.

What is interesting, however, is that neither of the two sites suggest that it will be called the Galaxy S III, instead calling the device simply “The next Galaxy”.

To infinity?

This move echoes that of Apple’s approach to its third-generation iPad, which is officially known (in an incredibly search-unfriendly way) as 'the new iPad'.

It’s not yet clear whether this is just a clever ruse by Samsung to make everyone talk about its next superphone, or a deliberate poke at Apple as with the teaser video’s sheep reference.

We’ll no doubt find out when the next Galaxy (S III) is unveiled in London on May 3rd.
