Unreal Engine programmer: Smartphones are 'the new PC'

And PC-like scaling performance options should become the norm

Unreal Engine programmer: Smartphones are 'the new PC'

Unreal Engine programmer Niklas Smedberg believes that smartphones are "the new PC" due to their wide variety of GPUs, CPUs, and memory specifications.

Smedberg went on to say that because of this, smartphone games should have built-in PC-like performance options and controls to allow gamers the choice of speed vs visual fidelity.

"On just iOS alone you still have a wide range of different devices and different performances to cover," Smedberg said at this year's annual Games Developer's Conference event in San Francisco.

"Because of the disparity in hardware, everything on iOS has to be built with the lowest settings in mind. On Xbox 360 you can try and get everything out of the console, but on mobile you have to scale performance for a wide range of device.

"So, to be future proof, it would be nice to have PC-style settings."

As you'll no-doubt already know, PC games allow you to fiddle and tweak with levels of detail, shadows, and other performance settings in order to achieve the best experience your hardware can offer.

"It would be nice to give the power to the user," Smedberg concluded.
