Still standing the test of time

Civilization Revolution, Pro Evo 2012, and Pirates! heading to Windows Phone this spring

Microsoft has lifted the lid on a number of titles heading to Windows Phone this spring, and while there won't be any surprises for gamers moving across from iOS, the three new titles are of a pretty high calibre.

First up is Firaxis's Civilization Revolution, which we'd presume is a port of the iOS version of the console-and-mobile-only entry in the long-running strategy series.

As in the main PC franchise, your task is to lead one of the planet's major civilizations, like England, Russia, or - controversially for the historians in the crowd - the United States, to world dominance over the course of human history.

It's a bit battle-heavy compared to the more balanced PC titles, but should prove to be quite a break from the rows and rows of casual titles available on the Windows Phone Marketplace' shelves.

Avast!

Talking of casual, Firaxis is also bringing the acclaimed Pocket Gamer Gold Award-winning Sid Meier's Pirates! to Windows Phone. Arr!

In Pirates! (yes, the exclamation mark is the studio's doing), you step into the buckled shoes of a privateer working for one of the four major European powers during the age of exploration right up until the time of the pirate hunters (and the subsequent end to 'yo-ho-ho'ing in the Caribbean).

Mixing action mini-games with open-world strategic rum doings, it's one of the more unusual titles you're likely to play, and - if it's anything like the iPad version - should prove annoyingly addictive, to boot. Ah-har, arr!

On the head, son

PES 2012 is the final title on the list, which - while not blowing us away with its on-field antics on iPhone - should fill any gaping hole in a Windows Phone footy fan's heart. Especially given the lack of competition.

It comes with a fully licensed Champions League competition, as well as a version of the Master League that sees you experience the highs and lows of playing as 11 men who run around a pitch and kick a ball.

No prices or release dates have been announced for any of the titles just yet, but we'll let you know when they board the system. Arr! [That's enough - Ed].
