During last week's Nintendo Direct broadcast, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata announced that Capcom, Namco Bandai, and Sega are teaming up on a brand-new 3DS project.

A teaser site for the unnamed game, which sees a scientist open up a top-secret vault to reveal the three companies' logos displayed in petri dishes, promptly appeared online.

Overnight, this micro-site was updated so that when you click on one of the company logos, three coloured "X" chromosomes appear in each dish.

But, what could they mean?

Pinches of salt at the ready

The detectives over at Nintendo Gamer and gaming forum NeoGAF have been busy poring over these chromosomes or "specimens" for clues, and have posited some theories as to what the colour-coded X's might represent.

Both Nintendo Gamer and NeoGAF believe that the colours of the chromosomes represent characters from each publisher's popular franchises, such as randy witch Bayonetta, Klonoa, and Resident Evil's Leon Kennedy and Chris Redfield.

A few folk have even gone so far as to suggest that the three publishers could be contributing the abovementioned characters to upcoming quirky fighter Smash Bros for 3DS and Wii U.

However, the game's producer Masahiro Sakurai stated in January that development on the game hadn't even started yet.

For now, then, this mystery collaborative project will have to remain just that.
