Digitalfrog's iOS RPG and RTS mash-up Crystal War: Blood Field has seen its price slashed in half from $1.99 to 99c.

A sequel to Crystal War - which received a Bronze Award on this very site - Crystal War: Blood Field looks to improve upon its predecessor by including a full-featured online multiplayer mode.

Class war

At the beginning of the game, you choose from two character classes, each of which has 29 units.

Throw in the fact there are 88 stages to battle across, over 140 achievements to earn, several skills to manage, and both human and CPU opponents to fight, and you have a game that isn't short on content.

In terms of gameplay, the developer says Crystal War: Blood Field could be described as a "castle defence" title at a basic level, but that would be ignoring the sizeable RPG and strategy elements incorporated into it.

Mastering the real-time strategy elements is key to winning battles, with the collection of sufficient crystal resources essential to building up a large and powerful army.

Protecting the miners that collect the crystal resources is another notable and engaging layer of challenge.

Step by step

Crystal War: Blood Field's RPG-style progression aims to draw you into the game's battles even further.

You'll see your resources, inventory, and characters evolve and adapt to the increasing challenges of the wars in which you'll be involved. Every victory sees you getting a few steps closer to tooling up with new weapons and skills.

This intoxicating mixture of genres and features makes for a highly intriguing single-player campaign – but, the developer is keen to emphasise the amount of work that went into the game's online multiplayer, too. In the Network mode, you can challenge opponents across the globe in both the Unlimited and Rivalry modes. You can even set up specific objectives in battles as you see fit. To help keep things competitive, Digitalfrog has included unlockable achievements in the game, support for OpenFeint, as well as a ranking system that allow you to compare yourself against the very best warriors. Crystal War: Blood Field is available now, and has been reduced to 59p / 99c / €0.79 from today [iTunes link]. A lite version of the game is also available [iTunes link].
