Maybe Jimmy Buffett's bigger in America than he is in the UK, but releasing a game inspired by the country rock singer-songwriter and titled after his 1977 hit Margaritaville has to be considered one of the strangest strategic moves we've seen in the portable sphere yet.

THQ doesn't seem to think it's really, really weird, though, and has drafted Buffett in to consult on this new 3D social freemium title for iPad and Facebook.

Actually, I'll take that drink, after all

As you can probably guess from its title, Margaritaville Online is all about building up and exploring a tropical paradise, complete with "customised bars and outfits", "playful mini-games", and a soundtrack penned by the main man himself.

"The Margaritaville laid back state of mind is inherently social, and this game has captured the spirit of that lifestyle," Buffet writes on the press release. "With Margaritaville Online, fans across the globe can party together any time and any place."

If you fancy partying together with like-minded folk in quite an attractive-looking 3D world (albeit one that doesn't appear to feature any alcohol, if the trailer's anything to go by), you can download Margaritaville Online now from the App Store by following this download link.
