Things in the line-drawing genre have been quiet of late.

Firemint's Spy Mouse was perhaps the last variation on the concept worth playing.

Well, UK developer Four Door Lemon (together with industry veteran Stuart Burrows) is making another attempt with its interesting The Lighthouse HD.

Ray of light

As the name suggests, you control the beam of a lighthouse; wherever your finger taps on the screen, its beam appears and as you move it, any nearby ships will follow it.

Technically, though, it's not a pure line drawing game as you don't trace an arc that the ships then follow. They only follow you in real-time.

In each mission, you have various tasks, such as rescuing life rafts or picking up crates, as well as avoiding any hazards to guide your ships to safety.

Of the deep

As with games such as Flight Control and Harbor Master, the real fun starts when you have multiple craft - moving a different speeds - in motion, and you start to balance mission goals with keeping everything afloat.

The other neat thing about The Lighthouse HD is that it's set within a foggy, atmospheric 3D world.

Throw into the mix creatures like Megalodon sharks and the Kraken that you fend off using flares, fog-horns and buoys, plus 30 levels, and Game Centre and OpenFeint leaderboards and achievements and there should be enough to keep salty seadogs happy.

Currently only available for iPad, The Lighthouse HD is out now, priced $4.99, €3.99 or £2.99.
