Scammers swap iPad 2s with clay at 4 major Canadian retailers

Four major Canadian retailers are investigating as many as 24 missing iPad 2s after scammers swapped the devices with clay.

Up to 24 Apple tablets were discovered missing, replaced with clay replicas at Future Shop, Best Buy, Walmart, and London Drugs outlets across Canada.

The ol' switcheroo

It is believed that fraudsters pulled a fast one on retailers by purchasing the devices before swapping them out with clay and returning them sealed.

In some cases, the iPad chargers have also been removed from the boxes and replaced with clay.

Fraud investigations are currently under way with Apple confirming their involvement. Future Shop and Best Buy say as many as ten clay iPad boxes were sold in their stores while Walmart is investigating a further ten cases. London Drugs say they're aware of four cases at their stores.
