The already pretty darn lifeproof Motorola Defy+ has just got some tough competition... from itself!

In collaboration with UK digger manufacturer JCB, Motorola is released a limited edition Defy+. This incredibly rugged handset is aimed at people who work in the demanding construction and engineering sectors but still want all the benefits of a powerful Android smartphone.

Hardware-wise, the phone is a stock Motorola Defy+ encased in a "patented visco-elastic protective sleeve" that adds improved shock protection. That means you still get Android 2.3, it's still powered by a 1GHz processor, and it still sports a 5-megapixel camera on the rear.

Software for hard work

JCB's involvement in the Defy+ project extends beyond the blower's hardware, mind.

As a result of this unique JCB / Motorola partnership, the special edition Defy+ includes some useful apps for anyone in the construction equipment field, including a spirit level, theodolite, decibel meter and recorder, torch, unit converter, and DIY store locator.

Bundled with a car charger, the Defy+ JCB Edition will retail SIM-free in the UK for £260.

From starting out as a games tester for Mastertronic, Virgin and Sega in the late 1980s, it may seem odd to then ditch everything to write about mobile phones that, at the time, lasted 20 minutes between charges. He always had a hunch mobiles would become quite popular, but possibly didn't realise how powerful (and, ironically, returning to 20 minutes between charges). Jonathan's job is to continue advising on the best hardware to buy, in order to enjoy games that have advanced considerably since those long days and nights testing Double Dragon on the C64.
