CES 2012: Pokemon meets Skylanders in new AR title Akodomon for iPhone and Android
Real toys with virtual lives
We've seen companies try and blend physical toys with gaming before (such as in the Nintendo 3DS game Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure), but it's not exactly a common occurrence.
One company hoping to change that is the excitedly named WowWee, which is demonstrating the latest of its augmented reality smartphone games, Akodomon, at CES this year.
Packaged as a conventional action figure, the bundle contains a figure, a terrium, and an environment marker piece.
Utilising the camera housed in your mobile, you can view your creature in its desktop habitat through a free augmented reality app.
Creature featuresPersonality traits, play patterns, and the general well-being of your plastic pal can all be controlled via the app.
Online features are also present, letting you share your monster’s progress with other proud parents. You can even pit your creations against one another, turning a virtual PTA meeting into a WWE monster smackdown .
While these “amplified reality” apps are free, you can purchase upgrades via micro transactions.
The App Gear toy bundles will be priced between $9.99 and $19.99, and are compatible with all iOS and Android mobile devices.
