These days, post-apocalyptic wastelands and heavy metal vehicles boasting vast amounts of weaponry go together like Mel Gibson and self destructive behaviour.

Brazilian developer Mobjoy has added something else to the mix in its freemium iPhone game Road Warrior though - stunts.

As we'd expect to see in motorcross or skateboard games, the 2D arcade action game has you whizzing through nine mountainous levels, which offer you the big air opportunities you'll need to spin anti or clockwise - gaining coins, nitro boosts and other power ups if you can successfully land the rotations.

Get the wrong angle and you're likely to explode, although a new car will quickly spawn, ensuring you're never out of the action for too long.

Race, shoot, make money

Crashes will slow you down, however, and because the game's acceleration is automatic, you'll want to avoid this, as well as using each vehicle's acrobatic attributes to make the most of the multiple tracks and score a good race time. Of course, you also have your weapons to take out opponents - gaining more of the cash you'll need to upgrade your weapons (there are five types) and other attributes.

New vehicles - there are eight - can be bought using in-game currency, or you can drop real cash - ranging from 99c for $27,000 in-game to $50 for $2.5 million. There are three bosses for you to beat, gaining their special vehicles in the process.

Mobjoy also supports the Tapjoy network so you can get cash by performing certain actions such as watching videos or signing up for other companies' services.

Road Warrior is out now and free for iPhone. You can see how it plays in the following video.
